Day by Day Itinerary

Pre-Trip Briefing

Before the official start of your trek, we will meet for a quick briefing and to ensure you have all the equipment needed for your trek. This briefing day could be a few days before your trek, if you are going on a safari or game drive, or the day before you start.

Please provide accommodation information so we can meet you at your hotel, or reach out and we can assist in planning your Arusha accommodations.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut 1385 m - 2515 m

Start off with a hearty breakfast, then transfer from your hotel to Momella Gate (1385m). After registration, begin the 10 km trek through Arusha National Park’s Forest.

The hike usually takes 4-6 hours and climbers might have a chance to see various primates, such as colobus or Blue Monkeys, and plenty of bird species, from starlings and sun birds, to turacos.

Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Lunch and Dinner Provided.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut 2515 m - 3570 m

After breakfast, you’ll begin the 8 km hike to Saddle Hut. (Approx 3-5 hrs)

While the hike is not long, you may begin to feel the altitude. Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, enjoy a hot lunch, then take an acclimatization hike to Little Meru, which has breathtaking views and takes approximately 1 hr.

Climbers are advised to rest early this day, as the summit attempt begins around midnight.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak, to Miriakamba Hut. 3570 m - 4566 m

You will wake around midnight and prepare for the summit with a cup of hot tea or coffee and a light snack.

The first few hours of the trek will be in darkness, hiking only by the light of a headlamp. First, pass Rhino Point, then continue up, toward the crater rim. Portions of the trek require walking through thick volcanic ash, and most climbers find trekking poles are very helpful during this part of the climb.

The summit Trek is only 5 km, but at the high altitude, most climbers find it takes 5-7 hours to reach the summit. The goal is to reach in time for sunrise atop Socialist Peak for a truly incredible view from the tip of a dormant volcano.

After a few memorable photos, descend back to Saddle Hut for a warm brunch and brief rest.

Then, continue descent to Miriakamba Huts for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate. 2515 m - 1385 m

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with your climbing crew, then complete the descent into the forest of Arusha National Park.

You may take your time, enjoying the sites and animal sightings as you walk in the park.
You will have a park ranger with your climbing crew, so this is an official walking safari included in this mountain trek.

Enjoy a picnic lunch near lovely Tululusia Waterfall as an ideal ending to an adventurous trek.

The descending trek can take 3-4 hours.

At Momella Gate, you will awarded your climbing certificates for summiting Mount Meru.
