3-day Mount Meru Climb

3 Days Mount Meru Climb Overview

Standing at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is the second-highest point in Tanzania, second only to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 3-day trek is a challenge requiring 18-hrs (or more!) of trekking on the final day.

We also offer a 4-day climb, which is better suited for beginners, spreading descending trek over two days for a more relaxed return.

It is appropriate for serious hikers who are hoping to get pre-acclimatization before attempting Kilimanjaro, or athletes who enjoy trekking in beautiful settings.

The trek passes through the forests of Arusha National Park and into the moorland and alpine desert toward the final summit. During the summit, trekkers will pass alongside the breathtaking ash cone of this dormant volcano before reaching Socialist Peak.

Day by Day Itinerary

Pre-Trip Briefing

Before the official start of your trek, we will meet for a quick briefing and to ensure you have all the equipment needed for your trek. This briefing day could be a few days before your trek, if you are going on a safari or game drive, or the day before you start.

Please provide accommodation information so we can meet you at your hotel, or reach out and we can assist in planning your Arusha accommodations.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut 1385 m - 2515 m

Start off with a hearty breakfast, then transfer from your hotel to Momella Gate (1385m). After registration, begin the enchanting 10 km trek through Arusha National Park’s Forest.

The hike usually takes 4-6 hours and you may see black and white Colobus or Blue Monkeys in the trees, as well as beautiful birds, including Purple-crested or Blue Turacos.

Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Lunch and Dinner Provided.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut 2515 m - 3570 m

After breakfast, you’ll begin the 8 km hike to Saddle Hut. (Approx 3-5 hrs)

While the hike is not long, you may begin to feel the altitude. Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, enjoy a hot lunch, then take an acclimatization hike to Little Meru, which has breathtaking views and takes approximately 1 hr.

Climbers are advised to rest early this day, as the summit attempt begins around midnight.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak, to Momella Gate. 3570 m - 4566 m

Rise in the depths of the night and prepare for the summit with a cup of hot tea or coffee and a light snack.

The night trek requires you climb with a headlamp, and trekking poles are highly recommended, as well.

First, you will climb to Rhino Point and enjoy a brief respite, then continue toward the summit. Many climbers find the most grueling part is trekking through the sand-like ash near the crater rim.

As the sky begins to lighten, you will be rewarded with stunning views for the steep, rocky finish at Socialist Peak.

If you reach in time for sunrise, you will have a truly memorable experience, looking over the landscape and catching a view of Mount Kilimanjaro, standing like a far-off brother to Mount Meru in the distance.

The summit attempt is 5 km, and typically takes 5-7 hours.

After, descend back to Saddle Hut for a warm brunch and brief rest.

The descending trek (13 km descent) continues, all the way past Miriakamba Hut and to Momella Gate for a full day of hiking.

You should descend by 6 pm, to abide by park regulations.

– End of Trek –

An alternative to this long trekking day is the 4-day Mount Meru Trek, which spreads the descent over two days, allowing climbers more rest after the grueling summit climb.

It’s always an adventure with Real Adventure Safaris!
